“People had been telling Kiki that she was a strong black woman her whole life. She supposed she was lucky that way - there are worse things to be told. But the fact remained: as a sentence it was really beginning to bore the hell out of her.” — Zadie Smith, On Beauty.

“The strength of her daughter’s burgeoning will, the adolescent intensity of it, was something they were both discovering together, year on year. Kiki felt herself a whetstone that Zora was sharpening herself against.” — ‘On Beauty’, Zadie Smith (pg 198)

fizzygoodmakefeelnice replied to your post: I’ve never really read a book about race before ‘On Beauty’.
You should read Beloved, by Toni Morrison.

If it hadn’t clashed with my Shakespeare course I was going to to do ‘African American Literature’ this year, and Beloved was on it.  I really want to read it.
